Tile Drainage Flow Partitioning and Phosphorus Export in Vermont USA

نویسندگان

چکیده

Tile drainage (TD) has been identified as a potential non-point source of phosphorus (P) pollution and subsequent water quality issues. Three fields with TD in Vermont USA were monitored to characterize hydrology P export. Fields corn silage used minimal tillage cover cropping practices. Preferential flow path (PFP) activity was explored by separating into pathway connectivity components using two hydrograph separation techniques, electrical conductivity end member unmixing, recession analysis. the dominant export because higher total discharge. Drought conditions during this study limited surface runoff, possibly resulted maximum PFP active clay soils. The non-growing season dominated annual loading for three years. Peak concentrations occurred events following manure injection fall, well spring post crop termination post-planting. Intra-event analysis rainfall pulses showed that intensity pulses. This highlights impacts current management, climate change increase transport TD.

Effectiveness of Constructed Wetlands in Reducing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Export from Agricultural Tile Drainage

nutrient in estuaries. Phosphorus enters surface waters in both dissolved and particulate form and is generally Much of the nonpoint N and P entering surface waters of the the limiting nutrient in lakes. A large portion of the N Midwest is from agriculture. We determined if constructed wedands could be used to reduce nonpoint N and P exports from agricultural and P now entering U.S. freshwater ...

Phosphorus losses through agricultural tile drainage in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Tile drainage water from agricultural fields commonly exceeds environmental guidelines for phosphorus (P) in rivers and streams. The loss of P through artificial drainage is spatially and temporally variable, and is related to local factors. This study characterizes variability in total P (TP) and soluble reactive P (SRP) concentrations in weekly drainage samples from 39 agricultural fields in ...

Modification of phosphorus export from an eastern USA catchment by fluvial sediment and phosphorus inputs

Phosphorus (P) export from agricultural catchments can accelerate freshwater eutrophication. Landscape-based remedial measures can reduce edge-of-field P losses. However, stream channel hydraulics and fluvial sediment properties can modify the forms and amounts of P exported by the time it reaches the catchment outlet. This study examines if land use, fluvial sediment properties, and storm flow...

Design and Hydrologic Performance of a Tile Drainage Treatment Wetland in Minnesota, USA

Treatment wetlands are increasingly needed to remove nitrate from agricultural drainage water to protect downstream waters, such as the Gulf of Mexico. This project sought to develop a new edge-of-field treatment wetland, designed to remove nitrate-nitrogen and enhance phosphorus removal by plant harvest and to monitor its effectiveness. A 0.10 ha wetland was designed and installed to treat sub...

Reducing phosphorus loss in tile water with managed drainage in a claypan soil.

Installing subsurface tile drain systems in poorly drained claypan soils to improve corn ( L.) yields could potentially increase environmental phosphorus (P) loss through the tile drainage system. The objectives of the study were to quantify the average concentration and loss of ortho-P in tile drain water from a claypan soil and to determine whether managed subsurface drainage (MD) could reduc...
